Awakening Consciousness – A Women’s Guide l By Robin Marvel

January 1, 2012 in Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Daily life for women in particular, can be extremely challenging. Sometimes life will erupt into a stress filled and hectic melee giving a woman little time for self – let alone dealing with her spirituality. Between family, work, managing a home and just being herself a woman certainly needs to be able to stay spiritually balanced, spiritually aware, focused and confident. When seeking guidance in spiritual matters there are some great written resources that can help and some that will confuse.

One of the better self help guides to becoming spiritually balanced and aware is Awakening Consciousness – A Women’s Guide by author Robin Marvel. Robin Marvel has also written other books as a part of this series, Awakening Consciousness Guide for Girls and Awakening Consciousness Guide for Boys.

Awakening Consciousness is a well put together book; it is a pleasure to read and captures the reader’s interest immediately. The reader is not overwhelmed with lots of spiritual buzz words and vague theories. Also, this book is written with learning in mind as it contains exercises that are also simple to do and with a few tries will obtain results.

Not only intensely informativeAwakening Consciousness also gives detailed information on the various tenets of spirituality but it is also a workbook fraught with spirituality exercises with memo areas for the reader to take personal notes to keep track of daily results. Women of all spiritual levels can use this book as a guide to opening her spiritual side or for enhancing and or reinforcing spiritual awareness techniques. Also included with the material in the book is a series of relevant positive reinforcement statements which really do help to bolster the building self esteem process. Reading this book will change the way you approach life and the obstacles it can throw at you.

This book is an insightful and helpful guide for helping any woman find her way back to her calm, peaceful and balanced spiritual state. I enthusiastically recommend this book to the curious, the novice or the highly advanced spiritual woman seeking to travel the road to her spiritual freedom or improve her spiritual journey in life.

Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life | By Nora T. Gedgaudas

December 14, 2011 in Health & Fitness, Non-Fiction, Personal Development

Most people today are generally unhealthy – our current eating habits, lifestyles and daily stress levels all come together to make us into human time bombs waiting to explode from a disease or ailment.

In our daily lives we are constantly bombarded by toxins, either through the foods that we eat, which are laden with chemicals or through our living environment in which toxins can be found from everything to the soap you wash with, to the cell phone that you talk on daily.

With all the miracle cures and diets available on the current market, why are people now dying younger and faster than ever? Why did our pre-historic ancestors live so long? What should we be doing differently in order to lead a healthier and longer life?

One particular book seems to contain the answers to humanity’s health and longevity issues; and that is the book Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life, authored by Nora T. Gedgaudas CNS, CNT.

About
Nora T. Gedgaudas is a certified nutritional therapist and also has a private practice in the neuro-feedback field; she is also very active in the nutrition and health community. It is by virtue of her professional career and expertise in the field of nutrition that she has authored such a well written, thoroughly researched, and comprehensive, health and nutrition book.

In Primal body, Primal Mind, Ms. Gedgaudas discusses in depth the plight of current human dietary habits, regimes dietary requirements and compares them to our Paleolithic ancestors. Our Paleolithic ancestors led stronger, healthier lives by eating a diet high in fats, animal proteins and higher in caloric intake.

Also their diet consisted of pesticide free, chemical free raw and cooked vegetation. But this book is not just a comparison; it is a demonstration of why many of us are not optimally healthy. Ms. Gedgaudas posits that the current human health plight is due to following currently prescribed medical and nutrition dogma about our dietary requirements.

Impressions
I found this book to be an insightful, entertaining and very informative compendium of health and nutrition facts.

This book should become as standard in homes as the bible, for it contains very important life enhancing advice that is easy to comprehend and follow. By offering detailed health regimes, recipes and viable health strategies this book is a powerful tool for a person’s healthy survival in this life.

The nutrition advice dispensed in this book is a guide to a better life for anyone willing to make the changes. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in enhancing the current state of their health.

December 11, 2011 in Memoirs, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Praying for Strength is a memoir of Larry Michael Dredla, an Ex Suicidal, Alcoholic, Drug Addict who overcame his addictions and became a teacher.

The Plot
How does drug addiction start? How does it feel? And how can one overcome it? The author, Larry, tries to give some answers to questions about drug and alcohol addiction by presenting his journey as a high school teacher who battled for many years all kind of addictions.

Larry details how he became addicted to drugs, from marijuana to cocaine, and how it all starts by the bad influence of friends. He then shows the extent of the damages caused by addiction on his life as a son, a friend and a high school student. He describes how he reached the decision of committing suicide and what he learnt from his failed attempt.

Larry then relates how he regained faith in God and how He helped him through little miracles that opened his eyes and gave him the determination not only to win his battle against addiction, but to finish his studies, become a high school teacher and help teenagers with their problems.

The book is the documented Larry’s twelve step program. The faith in God and the amends to the people hurt the most by the addiction is present throughout the healing journey.

Impressions
The author addresses his book to young people who may feel, at some point or another, pressured or tempted to take drugs. He also gives a lot of advice to parents, teachers and coaches on how to spot the danger of addiction and how to deal with young addicts.

The book is written in a very light style and is easily read. It gives an insight on how faith and prayers can help one overcome their strongest addictions and get their life back.

{ BOOK GIVEAWAY } Kings of Colorado | By David Hilton

November 26, 2011 in Drama, Fiction, Life and Family, Personal Development

Will Sheppard’s life changes forever in ways he could never imagine, when he sees red one day and stabs his father with a pocketknife. At only thirteen years old Will is sent to the Swope Ranch boys reformatory in Colorado where he had to grow up pretty fast.

In the two years he was there he gained friends, lost friends, gained enemies, fought for his life and learnt to break in wild horses.

The story is told by Will himself reflecting on his life as a child, still haunted by the tragic and heart breaking events that occurred during that time. He was never the same again once he left the ranch and guilt and regret weighed heavy on his shoulders.

I don’t think I could have imagined the events that took place during this story if I tried. The horrific way the boys were treated and treated each other, the cold calculating pure evil of the wardens were so well scripted, that I felt my stomach turn as I read.

I kept on reading as I wanted to find out how Will’s life turned out, even though it was written through his eyes as an older man, so I knew he was alive, I wanted to find out if those life events were finally laid to rest and he could be happy in the end.

I can’t imagine what it must have felt like to be ripped away from your home and away from your mother at such a vulnerable age, and have to defend and fight your corner in unfamiliar and frightening circumstances.

David Hilton’s writing definitely helped me to take a step closer to that understanding.

Missing Andy: The Journey from Grief to Joy | By Lori A. Moore

July 15, 2011 in Drama, Life and Family, Memoirs, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” – From a headstone in Ireland.

Missing Andy is a poignant narration from the author itself on the process of experiencing death of a loved one. It tackles the pain, grief, and then finally acceptance and joy of it.

This book is a tragic love story, with the love described as being the “agape” type rather than the romantic one. Furthermore, it consists of lessons of living life as a Christian and was also awarded as the 2010 Gold Award for Christian Living from ReadersFavorite.com.

Plot
Lori met her ex-husband, Andy, in his working place in the summer of 1992. It was an unusual starting point of dating, but eventually it led to a marriage of twelve years. However, as unsolvable problems arose between them, it was dissolved into a divorce… but they remain the best of friends, even when Lori had remarried to Michael. Michael is even friends with Andy, too.

But something tragic happened unexpectedly… Andy died due to a lethal blood clot. Upon hearing the dreaded seven words, Lori was lost and felt like everything turned dark. It was really hard and painful for Lori as Andy was her very best friend; despite that they divorced, he was still a big part of Lori’s everyday life.

Lori journeyed and work through the process of grief, which enables her to deepen her relationship with Christ. With this, she found her path again and was able to accept and understand God’s plan for Andy. She’s able to move forward again with her life… along with the guidance of Jesus Christ.

Impressions
This story is really remarkable and very true in the process of grieving. I do agree with Angie’s thoughts (Lori’s friend), that in order to really understand the pain and grief of losing someone, one must be in the shoes of the person who actually lost someone. Sometimes, the condolences said by people seemed very empty and cliché, even though that they’re being sincere.

When I read this book, at some point, I did not want to continue reading because it reminded me of the pain of the death of my loved one. It reminded me of the death of my beloved late Grandma, who was more like a mother to me.

As a nurse, death is not new to me, for I have had patients who died in front of my very own eyes. And as a Roman Catholic, death is not to be feared of, but to be embraced, for it is part of the cycle of life and with death, you may be able to join Jesus for eternity.

But as a human, it was very painful to experience. As same with Lori, I didn’t go all the way with the grieving process (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). I never went into denial and anger for I know for quite some time during the said year that it will be my grandma’s last year on earth. I did undergo the bargaining phase, and it was actually answered… I was given six months more. When the news came that my grandma was dead, my first reaction was acceptance for I know that it was coming, and the following were depression and lots of regrets.

Furthermore, I do agree with Lori that death in every way is God’s plan. The death of my Grandma and the death of Andy are sort of similar because before they were taken, God provided time for us to be with them before He takes them.

As for Andy, the day he was born and baptized was also the day people said goodbye to him, but as for my Grandma (who was a devotee to Mama Mary), she was born on the same birth month of Mama Mary and was buried on the Feast of Immaculate Conception.

This book is really helpful on the process of grieving, accepting, and moving forward. It gives you strength and enables you to further your relationship with the Maker.

{ BOOK GIVEAWAY } Other People’s Messes | By Amy Von Freter

July 6, 2011 in Life and Family, Memoirs, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

As we go through life, we learn are supposed to learn through our experiences. No matter how harsh our experiences turn out to be there is always a lesson to be learned. One such example of learning through your experiences is the e-book Other People’s Messes.

Other People’s Messes by author Amy Von Freter sets the bar for how to survive the drastic changes that can come behind the breakup of a marriage. However this book is more than just an accounting of Amy’s trials and tribulations throughout her life, it is the ultimate self-help novel for women.

It shows you the importance of maintaining your faith and self esteem even at the most heart breaking of times. Also it imparts the importance of having the intestinal fortitude to move on with your life when you are in a non growing, non loving relationship; this would not be an easy task for anyone to accomplish but, Ms. Von Freter shows her readers how she did it and that it is possible for anyone to accomplish.

Plot
Every woman that has ever been in love has gone through some remotely similar, if not the same situation as Amy. I found this book to be both easy to relate to and inspirational.

This book takes you on the emotional ride that was Amy Von Freter’s life; from her marital woes to the loss of her profitable business that was run by her and her unfaithful, manipulative, selfish, and heartless husband.

She also portrays her struggles to make it as a newly single mother trying to handle the financial troubles that encumber anyone coming out of a recently broken marriage. As she struggles financially and emotionally she manages to run her own business; which in and of itself is a very difficult and exhausting task.

Throughout all of her struggles Amy managed to survive and overcome her tumultuous situation and kept her faith in god. Amy also shows how important it is to not isolate yourself and struggle alone – you need a support system of friends and family to help you cope with such major stresses.

Through this e-book Amy conveys a message of staying true to yourself while trying to raise a family, work and survive a painful divorce which is not an easy task but Amy did accomplished this and found true love and success as a rewards for her strength and faith.

Impressions
This book is so engrossing that at times I found myself cheering Amy on, exclaiming “You go girl!” and at other times I cried with her, feeling the depth of her pain and struggles.

This book should be recommended reading to all women of all ages and of all walks of life, whether they are in a relationship or not. There is a great deal to be learned from this book and there is nothing like learning from someone who has already walked through the fire; experience makes the best teacher.

Cleaning up behind other people and the messes they create in their own selfish pursuits of happiness in life is something many of us wind up doing time and time again. The lesson to be learned here is to stop cleaning up others people’s messes like Amy and take care of you. Thank you Amy Von Freter.

Favorite Scene
The ending where everything comes together for Amy; it sends out a loud and clear message of where there is faith there is hope. A

Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex | By Mary Roach

June 2, 2011 in Non-Fiction, Personal Development

In Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, Mary Roach takes a hilarious and irreverent look at one of life’s most interesting topics – sex. Leaving aside the basic mechanics of the act, Roach instead investigates the people behind the research, and the impact the science of sex has on our understanding of ourselves.

Plot
Possibly drawing on Roach’s extensive experience as a magazine writer, each chapter deals with a different aspect of sex research and can be read in isolation. Bonk concentrates on the more peculiar stories – and I can only assume this is a field that offered an embarrassment of riches from which to choose.

Sex is controversial and Bonk offers insight into some of the social history surrounding sex theories and sex research as well as the actual scientific findings.

For instance, Chapter 3, The Princess and Pea: The woman who moved her clitoris, and other ruminations on intercourse orgasms, covers: Marie Bonaparte, a princess who had the above-mentioned surgery and published a medical paper on clitoral placement in women; Roy Levin, who has researched the sensitivity of the female urethra; quite a few comparison measurements; Roach’s own attempt to measure her own genitals; Kegel; Kinsey; and pigs.

All combine in a discussion of how a woman’s physical characteristics may impact her sex life and how these have been studied and viewed over the last century.

Impressions
What’s most refreshing about Bonk is Roach herself. She fully accepts that this is an awkward topic to be researching and she doesn’t hesitate to editorialize on the strangeness of where her “But what about…” line of questioning has brought her.

As for the content, it’s an absorbing combination of the history of physiological sex research and how it has been proved or disproved, with current researchers and their trials and tribulations.

The chapters range from pig insemination (to focus the discussion of the connection of female orgasm and fertility), penile surgery, sex machines (in a chapter about physiological research) and monkey hormones.

Roach’s main argument revolves around the idea of sex research as something that is shunned but at the same time essential to our understanding of ourselves as human animals.

All of the areas where we as people find happiness are affected by, well, sex. Relationships, fertility, emotional balance, physical health are all impacted by sex. Yet, researchers are almost forced to work under the radar, using euphemisms to secure funding to understand a key element of the human experience.

Favorite Part
Mary volunteers herself and her husband to take part in 3D ultrasound imaging research. “’Here we go,’ Ed says grimly.”

Favorite Quote
“The Center for Sex and Culture does not court the curious passerby…There is an intercom with a buzzer labeled CSC. When you ring it, a voice says simply, ‘Hello?’ forcing you to announce that you are HERE FOR THE SEX MACHINE PARTY.”

The Forest Lover | By Susan Vreeland

May 27, 2011 in Fiction, Historical, Life and Family, Personal Development

The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland is a historical fiction novel set in early 1900’s British Columbia, Canada. The story is based on the life of famous Canadian artist, Emily Carr.

She is a young woman struggling to find her way in a provincial society with it’s choking limitations. Her passion is art and after studying in San Francisco and London, she returns home to Vancouver Island to pursue her artistic dreams.

Plot
Emily is drawn to the native people of British Columbia, the Nootka; their way of life pulls at her with it’s primitive simplicity and deep attachment to all spiritual things, living or dead. The Nootka family crests and ancestral stories are told by their majestic totem poles, which she wants to immortalize in her paintings. She struggles to find the best way to give her paintings the power and feeling the subject deserves.

The frustration of not being able to accurately express the love she has for the native people and their totem poles leads her to France to learn a new style of painting, Fauvism, a movement led by Henri Matisse. Inspired and refreshed, she travels back to her native country, yet, when she returns, she finds out the poles, as well as the native people of Canada, are disappearing rather quickly.

As she travels back and forth along the Canadian coastline trying to capture the spirit of the people and the land they inhabit, her own spirit takes a beating as well as her art, as her bold ways are unwelcome in Christian society.

Emily also struggles with her past and with the stifling memories of her missionary parents. Even after their deaths, the pain she felt as a child haunts her. She was the black sheep of the family because she had a strong will and a “frivilous” passion. Her art drove a wedge between her and her family, yet the peace and sense of purpose her painting gave her was how she felt she had served God. It was her own way.

Impressions
This story went straight to my heart. The independent and brave spirit of Emily Carr was depicted brilliantly by Vreeland.

Her words and narration gave the character such life and a spark that shined brightly from pages. I felt the dampness of the forest, the sounds of the leaves rustling, and the birds chirping in their sing-song voices.

The description of Emily’s surroundings were so vivid that I have put British Columbia at the top of my list for places I want to visit. The author researched Miss Carr’s background so thoroughly that I felt I was reading an memoir.

I felt myself pulled into the story in another way, as a writer, feeling my own angst of trying to pursue a creative passion. This story had a subplot woven in regarding the native people of Canada. Their lives were being stripped of meaning as the missionaries banned their native rituals and expression of beliefs. My heart hurt for them as I learned that the native people of Canada had the same fate as the natives here in America.

Ms. Vreeland is an unbelievable storyteller and I have every intention of reading her other books. I am going to start with Girl In Hyancith Blue which was her first novel and an award-winning story that was later developed into a Hallmark movie.

Favorite Scene
An instructor Emily had in Paris, Harry Gibb, kept a couple of the last pieces she had completed while studying under him. Before he sent her to another artist to continue her studies, he made her promise to visit the Salon d’Automne before she left for home. She fulfilled that promise and as she walked through the doorway into one of the rooms, there were the paintings she had left with Gibbs hanging on the wall. The overwhelming emotion flowed from the page and I felt that amazing moment for Emily like I was standing there holding her hand.

Favorite Quote
“To go to my grave without knowing whether it was lack of talent or lack of perseverance that failed me, without feeling that I’d probed deeply, without sucking the joy of hearty work, that would be self-inflicted pain I could never forgive myself for.”

Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science | By J.B.

May 23, 2011 in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science by J.B. is a sagacious novel that ingeniously combines the worlds of the consciousness, spirituality and quantum level science as definitive proof of the capabilities of human beings.

The novel’s main character – John is in deep need of spiritual guidance and Zor is the protagonist and spiritual guide that enlightens John into a new understanding of life and reality. The book is clear, concise and very easy to relate to.

About
Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science encompasses all the main tenets of every possible spiritual belief and tangent scientific spiritual theories as we may or may not know them. The book does not just lay out spiritual theories for the reader to make their own connections to, it demonstrates the theories in living color for the reader to absorb and understand.

Although some of the theories are familiar this book is a great expression of all of the theories. The novel encompasses the following teachings: the effects of negative thinking, how our thoughts effect our realities, the energetic interconnection of all living things, the true affects of placebos on the mind and body, the comprehension of evil and dispelling it, the power of prayer, the power of meditation, the real reason for the building of the Hadron Collider and even Quantum physics and its relation to our spiritual being.

Additionally, the book contains many more spiritual teachings but to name them all would do a disservice to the author and potential readers you need to experience this book for yourself.

From the outset, the book draws you in with the initial meeting between John Brewster and Zor. Zor is a dwarf and is targeted and insulted by some ignorant people. Zor does not respond to the insults and this lack of a reaction amazes John. Zor’s refusal to indulge in the negative behavior brings about a perfect explanation of the damaging effects of negative thoughts and actions.

The descriptions that are used to explain the debilitating effects of negative energy are to say the least completely accurate. Negative energy corrupts and destroys. I can say this because I have personally watched how negative energy destroyed someone’s mental well being and health until it caused their suffering and death.

Impressions
As a devoted spiritualist and book-freak for many years I have had the opportunity to read and study some of the most profound spiritual documents ever written. Some of those books left me with dangling unanswered questions. Other books inspired me to seek more information for further enlightenment and some books just left me confused, however this book is one of the few books that has everything so well put together.

I am sure one day this book will be considered a modern day gospel by all those that have the opportunity to read it. The book sums up and explains many theories that are normally expressed as separate doctrine. I found this book to be a god send and many others will find it just as valuable as there are many of us that are losing our faith because of the onerous road that life is to travel.

I could compare this book to other books pertaining to spirituality in modern day but this book bears no exact likeness to other books of this nature as it is a compendium of spiritual knowledge. This book really hit home with me because as I read it, I saw the connections that I made through my own pursuit of spiritual enlightenment come together as a whole.

Without giving away too much more of the book I would like to emphatically endorse this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether they are spiritually enlightened or just trying to make due while healing your life borne wounds, this book contains the spiritual “band aids” that we all need.

In Search of Lucy | By Lia Fairchild

May 9, 2011 in Drama, Fiction, Life and Family, Personal Development

In Search of Lucy by Lia Fairchild falls into the “slice of life “genre. This book takes you on Lucy’s emotional ride. We are made privy to Lucy Lang’s life — and what a life it turns out to be. The story is focused on how Lucy eventually finds herself through a life saving gesture for a loved one.

Plot
Lucy Lang has a problem she is thirty years old, unhappy with her job, unhappy with her life in general, and has very few friends and no special someone. She leads a rather lonely unfulfilled existence that came to be as a result of an absentee mother, a memory of a father figure and a distant sister.

Lucy also has another problem — she is estranged from herself. Lucy doesn’t really know who she is as a person. The internal strife that Lucy has going on in her life is not unusual; there are many of us that are unhappy with our current station in life and we look for ways to improve things in their life but sometimes that road can be hard to travel.

This story makes the statement that unless you know yourself, you will never be happy with your life and you will not know what makes you happy or how to be happy. What really matters it is not the way that we go about finding ourselves but that we do find ourselves so that we may lead a rich fulfilling.

Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I found the characters to be realistic and intriguing. The conversation between characters was natural and insightful.

The author created like-able characters that make the reader interested in what happens to them next Ms. Fairchild’s use of descriptive language works well, as I read the vividness of each scene stood out.

I found myself really wanting to know what would happen to Lucy by the end of the story; which road would she take to find herself or would she ever find herself, would Lucy ever be happy and fulfilled? Could Lucy let go of her resentments and fears allowing her to once again feel like herself?

The reader will not be disappointed by the ending of the story, as a matter of fact I found myself wanting more. I highly recommend this book as a really good read.
