Awakening Consciousness – A Women’s Guide l By Robin Marvel

January 1, 2012 in Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Daily life for women in particular, can be extremely challenging. Sometimes life will erupt into a stress filled and hectic melee giving a woman little time for self – let alone dealing with her spirituality. Between family, work, managing a home and just being herself a woman certainly needs to be able to stay spiritually balanced, spiritually aware, focused and confident. When seeking guidance in spiritual matters there are some great written resources that can help and some that will confuse.

One of the better self help guides to becoming spiritually balanced and aware is Awakening Consciousness – A Women’s Guide by author Robin Marvel. Robin Marvel has also written other books as a part of this series, Awakening Consciousness Guide for Girls and Awakening Consciousness Guide for Boys.

Awakening Consciousness is a well put together book; it is a pleasure to read and captures the reader’s interest immediately. The reader is not overwhelmed with lots of spiritual buzz words and vague theories. Also, this book is written with learning in mind as it contains exercises that are also simple to do and with a few tries will obtain results.

Not only intensely informativeAwakening Consciousness also gives detailed information on the various tenets of spirituality but it is also a workbook fraught with spirituality exercises with memo areas for the reader to take personal notes to keep track of daily results. Women of all spiritual levels can use this book as a guide to opening her spiritual side or for enhancing and or reinforcing spiritual awareness techniques. Also included with the material in the book is a series of relevant positive reinforcement statements which really do help to bolster the building self esteem process. Reading this book will change the way you approach life and the obstacles it can throw at you.

This book is an insightful and helpful guide for helping any woman find her way back to her calm, peaceful and balanced spiritual state. I enthusiastically recommend this book to the curious, the novice or the highly advanced spiritual woman seeking to travel the road to her spiritual freedom or improve her spiritual journey in life.

Praying for Strength | By Larry Michael Dredla

December 11, 2011 in Memoirs, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Praying for Strength is a memoir of Larry Michael Dredla, an Ex Suicidal, Alcoholic, Drug Addict who overcame his addictions and became a teacher.

The Plot
How does drug addiction start? How does it feel? And how can one overcome it? The author, Larry, tries to give some answers to questions about drug and alcohol addiction by presenting his journey as a high school teacher who battled for many years all kind of addictions.

Larry details how he became addicted to drugs, from marijuana to cocaine, and how it all starts by the bad influence of friends. He then shows the extent of the damages caused by addiction on his life as a son, a friend and a high school student. He describes how he reached the decision of committing suicide and what he learnt from his failed attempt.

Larry then relates how he regained faith in God and how He helped him through little miracles that opened his eyes and gave him the determination not only to win his battle against addiction, but to finish his studies, become a high school teacher and help teenagers with their problems.

The book is the documented Larry’s twelve step program. The faith in God and the amends to the people hurt the most by the addiction is present throughout the healing journey.

Impressions
The author addresses his book to young people who may feel, at some point or another, pressured or tempted to take drugs. He also gives a lot of advice to parents, teachers and coaches on how to spot the danger of addiction and how to deal with young addicts.

The book is written in a very light style and is easily read. It gives an insight on how faith and prayers can help one overcome their strongest addictions and get their life back.

Missing Andy: The Journey from Grief to Joy | By Lori A. Moore

July 15, 2011 in Drama, Life and Family, Memoirs, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” – From a headstone in Ireland.

Missing Andy is a poignant narration from the author itself on the process of experiencing death of a loved one. It tackles the pain, grief, and then finally acceptance and joy of it.

This book is a tragic love story, with the love described as being the “agape” type rather than the romantic one. Furthermore, it consists of lessons of living life as a Christian and was also awarded as the 2010 Gold Award for Christian Living from ReadersFavorite.com.

Plot
Lori met her ex-husband, Andy, in his working place in the summer of 1992. It was an unusual starting point of dating, but eventually it led to a marriage of twelve years. However, as unsolvable problems arose between them, it was dissolved into a divorce… but they remain the best of friends, even when Lori had remarried to Michael. Michael is even friends with Andy, too.

But something tragic happened unexpectedly… Andy died due to a lethal blood clot. Upon hearing the dreaded seven words, Lori was lost and felt like everything turned dark. It was really hard and painful for Lori as Andy was her very best friend; despite that they divorced, he was still a big part of Lori’s everyday life.

Lori journeyed and work through the process of grief, which enables her to deepen her relationship with Christ. With this, she found her path again and was able to accept and understand God’s plan for Andy. She’s able to move forward again with her life… along with the guidance of Jesus Christ.

Impressions
This story is really remarkable and very true in the process of grieving. I do agree with Angie’s thoughts (Lori’s friend), that in order to really understand the pain and grief of losing someone, one must be in the shoes of the person who actually lost someone. Sometimes, the condolences said by people seemed very empty and cliché, even though that they’re being sincere.

When I read this book, at some point, I did not want to continue reading because it reminded me of the pain of the death of my loved one. It reminded me of the death of my beloved late Grandma, who was more like a mother to me.

As a nurse, death is not new to me, for I have had patients who died in front of my very own eyes. And as a Roman Catholic, death is not to be feared of, but to be embraced, for it is part of the cycle of life and with death, you may be able to join Jesus for eternity.

But as a human, it was very painful to experience. As same with Lori, I didn’t go all the way with the grieving process (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). I never went into denial and anger for I know for quite some time during the said year that it will be my grandma’s last year on earth. I did undergo the bargaining phase, and it was actually answered… I was given six months more. When the news came that my grandma was dead, my first reaction was acceptance for I know that it was coming, and the following were depression and lots of regrets.

Furthermore, I do agree with Lori that death in every way is God’s plan. The death of my Grandma and the death of Andy are sort of similar because before they were taken, God provided time for us to be with them before He takes them.

As for Andy, the day he was born and baptized was also the day people said goodbye to him, but as for my Grandma (who was a devotee to Mama Mary), she was born on the same birth month of Mama Mary and was buried on the Feast of Immaculate Conception.

This book is really helpful on the process of grieving, accepting, and moving forward. It gives you strength and enables you to further your relationship with the Maker.

Favorite Quote

“Death is hard, but the people who are still living will sometimes make it even harder for you.”

{ BOOK GIVEAWAY } Other People’s Messes | By Amy Von Freter

July 6, 2011 in Life and Family, Memoirs, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

As we go through life, we learn are supposed to learn through our experiences. No matter how harsh our experiences turn out to be there is always a lesson to be learned. One such example of learning through your experiences is the e-book Other People’s Messes.

Other People’s Messes by author Amy Von Freter sets the bar for how to survive the drastic changes that can come behind the breakup of a marriage. However this book is more than just an accounting of Amy’s trials and tribulations throughout her life, it is the ultimate self-help novel for women.

It shows you the importance of maintaining your faith and self esteem even at the most heart breaking of times. Also it imparts the importance of having the intestinal fortitude to move on with your life when you are in a non growing, non loving relationship; this would not be an easy task for anyone to accomplish but, Ms. Von Freter shows her readers how she did it and that it is possible for anyone to accomplish.

Plot
Every woman that has ever been in love has gone through some remotely similar, if not the same situation as Amy. I found this book to be both easy to relate to and inspirational.

This book takes you on the emotional ride that was Amy Von Freter’s life; from her marital woes to the loss of her profitable business that was run by her and her unfaithful, manipulative, selfish, and heartless husband.

She also portrays her struggles to make it as a newly single mother trying to handle the financial troubles that encumber anyone coming out of a recently broken marriage. As she struggles financially and emotionally she manages to run her own business; which in and of itself is a very difficult and exhausting task.

Throughout all of her struggles Amy managed to survive and overcome her tumultuous situation and kept her faith in god. Amy also shows how important it is to not isolate yourself and struggle alone – you need a support system of friends and family to help you cope with such major stresses.

Through this e-book Amy conveys a message of staying true to yourself while trying to raise a family, work and survive a painful divorce which is not an easy task but Amy did accomplished this and found true love and success as a rewards for her strength and faith.

Impressions
This book is so engrossing that at times I found myself cheering Amy on, exclaiming “You go girl!” and at other times I cried with her, feeling the depth of her pain and struggles.

This book should be recommended reading to all women of all ages and of all walks of life, whether they are in a relationship or not. There is a great deal to be learned from this book and there is nothing like learning from someone who has already walked through the fire; experience makes the best teacher.

Cleaning up behind other people and the messes they create in their own selfish pursuits of happiness in life is something many of us wind up doing time and time again. The lesson to be learned here is to stop cleaning up others people’s messes like Amy and take care of you. Thank you Amy Von Freter.

Interview with J.B., Author of Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science

May 26, 2011 in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Spiritual

Recently I was honored with the request to review the Book “Zor” by J.B.; it turned out to be an excellent book written by a very kind and knowledgeable man.

The following is the interview that J.B. so graciously allowed me to conduct with him.

Mrs. Bookfreak: Based on the spiritual nature of the book Zor do you consider yourself a spiritual person? If so have you been that way all your life or did a particular circumstance lead you to becoming spiritual?

J.B.: Like most, I grew up practicing the religion of my parents which is Christianity. In college I became particularly interested in Philosophy and Quantum Physics. Both disciplines required a larger interpretation of religion. I realized the true path to God could not be exclusionary; it must include all religions, all philosophies, and all sciences. This delivered me to the much broader concept of spirituality.

Mrs. Bookfreak: What led you to writing the book Zor?

J.B.: Without sounding too dramatic, it came to me in a dream. I’ve never considered writing a book until the night I dreamt about Zor.

As I mentioned, I have been interested in philosophy, spirituality, and quantum physics my entire adult life, but I always thought of them as separate disciplines; by definition, self exclusionary. Then one evening, about 5 years ago, I had an epiphany.

I don’t know exactly what happened but I woke up in the middle of the night with a crystal clear understanding of a synergistic relationship. For the first time in my life I realized philosophy, spirituality, and science were not exclusionary but totally interdependent, leading to the same conclusion of connectivity. Sitting up in bed, it suddenly all made sense. I grabbed a pen and paper and started writing; no structure or format, simply my stream of consciousness.

About an hour later I had six pages of notes, gibberish to all but me. Exhausted, I fell back to sleep. When I woke later that morning I remembered having a lucid dream about a Haitian dwarf named Zor. In this dream I vividly “saw” both the opening and closing scenes of my book. Soon it occurred to me that the six pages of notes I had taken hours earlier tied both ends together. Later that day I began writing Zor.

Mrs. Bookfreak: Do you have plans for any future books similar to Zor?

J.B.: I do have an idea for the sequel, which will begin exactly where this book ends. Zor is driving away with his attorney as Jonathan watches from a sidewalk in D.C. It will be told as a third-person narrative with Zor’s attorney as the protagonist.

Mrs. Bookfreak: Do you have plans to write in other genres? If so would you mind sharing a brief summary of that book?

J.B.: I expect the sequel, though spiritual in nature, will deal much more with cultural issues, and international awareness.

Mrs. Bookfreak: How did you become a writer initially?

J.B.: I’ve always had something to say, (blogs, letters-to-the-editor, public forums, etc.), but I never intended to write a book. Over the years, I‘ve searched for a book with this message; hoping someone would write it, but no one did. I knew it was a story that needed to be told, so I told it.

Mrs. Bookfreak: What advice would you give to other novice writers?

J.B.: My advice would be to let the story take you where it wants to go. Don’t try to manipulate the narrative. Whenever I tried to make “Zor” more saleable by writing to the market I became lost, but when I let it flow, “Zor” wrote itself.

Mrs. Bookfreak: How did come up with the name Zor for the character in the book?

J.B.: Zor, the Haitian dwarf, was defined in my initial dream.

Mrs. Bookfreak: Did you intentionally name the characters John and Mary, so that readers would make a religious connection with the two characters?

J.B.: That never occurred to me until you asked the question. The beauty of all art, including the art of writing is that all participants bring their own interpretations. I did not cognitively draw on Christianity for the characters’ names, but we all know, there is no such thing as coincidence.

Mrs. Bookfreak: Do you consider yourself a spiritual messenger?

J.B.: The reason I published this book under a pseudonym is because I don’t consider myself the messenger. I don’t want people to look to me for answers. I have a hard enough time coming up with the questions!

I’m hoping this book stimulates the discussion, and drives people to other sources. One reviewer gave me the ultimate compliment when he said, “Zor is the type of book that makes you want to read other books.” I liked that.

Mrs. Bookfreak: How long did it take you to write Zor?

J.B.: Having a clear understanding of what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it, I expected to have a final draft completed in 4-6 months; surprisingly it took me over three years. Writing a book is all consuming. There can be no endeavor more daunting. Putting thought to paper in a coherent style is humbling enough, but the self imposed isolation, there lies the rub.

Mrs. Bookfreak: Did you research the spiritual tenets mentioned in the book or were you already well versed in those ideals?

J.B.: I’m often asked about the research process for “Zor”. In reality there wasn’t a need for much of one. Everything in this book is true, but I had already gleaned the factual information from decades of reading and study. I spent little time specifically researching any aspect of this book. As the narrative progressed the supportive details flowed naturally.

Mrs. Bookfreak: In conclusion J.B., thank you for allowing us (your readers and fans) into the world of your mind; Is there anything else you would like to add?

J.B.: Yes; I would like to thank my readers for their tremendous show of support. When you write a book you really have no idea how it will be received. I knew I wasn’t a great wordsmith but I thought I had a story to tell and I hoped someone would be interested in reading it. The number of positive comments I have received, both directly and through various media outlets, has been overwhelming. Thank you all!

Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science | By J.B.

May 23, 2011 in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science by J.B. is a sagacious novel that ingeniously combines the worlds of the consciousness, spirituality and quantum level science as definitive proof of the capabilities of human beings.

The novel’s main character – John is in deep need of spiritual guidance and Zor is the protagonist and spiritual guide that enlightens John into a new understanding of life and reality. The book is clear, concise and very easy to relate to.

About
Zor: Philosophy, Spirituality, and Science encompasses all the main tenets of every possible spiritual belief and tangent scientific spiritual theories as we may or may not know them. The book does not just lay out spiritual theories for the reader to make their own connections to, it demonstrates the theories in living color for the reader to absorb and understand.

Although some of the theories are familiar this book is a great expression of all of the theories. The novel encompasses the following teachings: the effects of negative thinking, how our thoughts effect our realities, the energetic interconnection of all living things, the true affects of placebos on the mind and body, the comprehension of evil and dispelling it, the power of prayer, the power of meditation, the real reason for the building of the Hadron Collider and even Quantum physics and its relation to our spiritual being.

Additionally, the book contains many more spiritual teachings but to name them all would do a disservice to the author and potential readers you need to experience this book for yourself.

From the outset, the book draws you in with the initial meeting between John Brewster and Zor. Zor is a dwarf and is targeted and insulted by some ignorant people. Zor does not respond to the insults and this lack of a reaction amazes John. Zor’s refusal to indulge in the negative behavior brings about a perfect explanation of the damaging effects of negative thoughts and actions.

The descriptions that are used to explain the debilitating effects of negative energy are to say the least completely accurate. Negative energy corrupts and destroys. I can say this because I have personally watched how negative energy destroyed someone’s mental well being and health until it caused their suffering and death.

Impressions
As a devoted spiritualist and book-freak for many years I have had the opportunity to read and study some of the most profound spiritual documents ever written. Some of those books left me with dangling unanswered questions. Other books inspired me to seek more information for further enlightenment and some books just left me confused, however this book is one of the few books that has everything so well put together.

I am sure one day this book will be considered a modern day gospel by all those that have the opportunity to read it. The book sums up and explains many theories that are normally expressed as separate doctrine. I found this book to be a god send and many others will find it just as valuable as there are many of us that are losing our faith because of the onerous road that life is to travel.

I could compare this book to other books pertaining to spirituality in modern day but this book bears no exact likeness to other books of this nature as it is a compendium of spiritual knowledge. This book really hit home with me because as I read it, I saw the connections that I made through my own pursuit of spiritual enlightenment come together as a whole.

Without giving away too much more of the book I would like to emphatically endorse this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether they are spiritually enlightened or just trying to make due while healing your life borne wounds, this book contains the spiritual “band aids” that we all need.

The Door of Everything | By Ruby Nelson

March 20, 2011 in Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Since time immemorial human beings have questioned their existence; posing the questions of who am I? and why am I here? During the quest for answers to those compelling questions, a great book that may be helpful is The Door of Everything by Ruby Nelson.

About
This book was originally published in 1963 and was written after an in depth study of mystical philosophy. It is a book with a unique approach to spirituality; it specifically deals with achieving immortality through enlightenment. Written in the voice of God the book has the tone of being a document that has been channeled.

Based on one of the teachings of Jesus; specifically John 3:15, “Whoever believe in him shall have everlasting life”, The Door of Everything brings into focus the steps to spiritual ascension through a spiritual rebirth.

It is postulated in this book that a spiritual rebirth will lead to immortality. Rebirth is the act of completely giving yourself over to God and a total overhaul of your spiritual beliefs. The main tenant of this book is the path to true spiritual enlightenment (ascension) leads to the door.

By obtaining the “keys” (mastering the ascension attitudes) you will be able to open the door. By opening the door you will conquer aging, illness and death.

The ascension attitudes are Love, Praise and Gratitude. When practiced daily, the attitudes will become second nature, and will lead to finding the nature of your true being. The ultimate goal is becoming like God; Which according to the author is God’s goal for us, his children.

Naturally, all this depends on one’s ability to remain focused on the positive thoughts and repelling the negative. Control of your thoughts and keeping them positive is a necessary part of achieving ascension. “So you think in your heart, so you are …” You can control your world with your thought so it is important for them to remain positive thoughts, so that your life will be filled with the positive.

Impression
I enjoyed reading this book it was informative, easy to read and understand. Also the book is to the point; the author conveys the ideals in this book in a well written format.

Part of what held my interest in this book is the creation by the author of a written environment where it felt like God was talking to me through the author.

This book is a compendium of invaluable spiritual tools; people from all walks of life can find spiritual guidance in this book. I am sure I will find myself periodically re-reading this book to the spiritual support I need.

The Secret: Unlocking The Source of Joy and Fulfillment | By Michael Berg

February 18, 2011 in Life and Family, Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

This small book carries a powerful message by employing simple action. “The only way to achieve true joy and fulfillment is by becoming a being of sharing.” The Secret conveys the framework to a more satisfying life through the straight forward action of sharing something, which is something we normally learn at the earlier stages of our lives. It is so simple; in fact, people will ordinarily overlook it by virtue of human nature alone.

About
The Secret: Unlocking The Source of Joy and Fulfillment is a spiritual self help book by author Michael Berg and is published by the Kabbalah Centre. Michael Berg also authored the bestselling book – The Way, an earlier spiritual self help book that conveys the tenets of Jewish mysticism also known as Kabbalism.

Although there is nothing new about what this book teaches, it is the way the idea is presented that sparks renewed interest. Through the relaying of stories concerning how those in unfortunate circumstances following this principle were able receive the abundance of blessings that helped alleviate their personal unfortunate circumstances.

Sample Story
One such story is the story of Josef and Rebecca or The Unexpected Visitor. Josef and Rebecca were very poor and had very little resources for money or food; they had just a gaunt cow. One evening at dinner time they were visited by a famous Kabbalist – Baal Shem Tov and his students. The Kabbalist and his students were traveling and needed to stop in order to rest and obtain food to continue their journey, they stopped at Josef and Rebecca’s home and asked could they share in their evening meal. Naturally knowing who the great teacher was Josef and Rebecca would not refuse.

Although knowing that they had no food or money to buy food, they sacrificed their only source of food or money – the one lanky cow that they owned. They were willing to share through personal sacrifice. Josef went and sold the cow and purchased the food necessary to satisfy the teacher. Rebecca prepared the food. The teacher and students ate until all the food was gone and they left.

Leaving Josef and Rebecca to fret over their now destitute circumstances. Rebecca was so disturbed that all she could do was cry. Josef was so disturbed by his wife’s crying that he ran into the forest and dropped to his knees to pray and ask God for help. Help came to Josef in the forest in the form of a dying man that fell by praying Josef in the forest. As it turned out the man had buried his riches in the forest to hide from his greedy, mean family.

When he fell by Josef, Josef sought a way to help him but to no avail because the man was dying. Appreciating Josef’s kindness the man gave to Josef his map of where his riches were buried in the forest – thus leading to the end of Josef and Rebecca’s poverty.

Sometime later on the teacher and students saw Josef and Rebecca in their new state of wealth and asked the teacher what could have happened to them. The teacher explained that it was Josef’s destiny to be joyful and fulfilled by sacrificing and sharing the last of what they had. They were able to move on to better circumstances instead of being stuck with their poverty and that one scrawny cow. It is the destiny of all human beings to lead happy and fulfilled lives through sharing and caring for others.

Impressions
I enjoyed reading this book, it is short, intelligible and to the point. I appreciated the conveying of the methods to be followed in the book through the telling of the centuries old stories, it made for a more interesting read. I rate this book a five out of five. It made me want to be a better person by becoming closer to God by sharing. I am sure that as time goes on I will find myself re-visiting this book for reinforcement of its maxim.

Fearless | By Max Lucado

September 8, 2009 in Non-Fiction, Personal Development, Spiritual

Buy This Book: Fearless - Written by Max LucadoBuy for Kindle: Fearless by Max Lucado

Max uses simple language while really breaking an idea down to its’ core, making a complicated idea easy to understand. In Fearless, Lucado tackles the subject of, as you can guess, fear. But it goes much deeper than fear. He covers the innate fear in humans: the fear of whether or not we matter. Do we matter to others? Do we matter to God? Are we good enough to matter?

But he shows us how God says, through his Word, that we are”worth more than sparrows.” He covers many fears including fear of running out of luck, whether we have enough, not protecting our children, violence & not having enough. He even covers intangible fears like global collapse and changes in our circumstances.

With each fear he shows us through God’s Word, how to trust in God and fear less. It was a very comforting book to read. For anyone who wants to delve deeper into the topics of the book, Max has added a discussion guide for groups or individuals at the end of the book. Overall, the book is very enjoyable. For being a quick  218 page read, it was packed with insight we may not always be able to glean from our own study of fears or through reading the Bible. Highly recommended by this less fearful mother of five.
